Kids in middle school or junior high have to make room in their backpacks for most of the same things elementary-aged children do, but because kids in this age group go through such rapid growth spurts, it's a good idea to make sure you focus on adjustable straps and plenty of pockets.

  1. There are some toys from our childhood that make us nostalgic, and that everyone from my generation seems to relate to, no matter where we grew up. I don’t know if the Stephen Joseph collections will make enough of a splash to become that for our children, but they are deserving! These have become a staple to us (and for better or worse, most folks who know us).We first stumbled upon them when we were searching for a cute backpack for my son (at the time, 15mos old, now 5yrs old). Since then we have given them as gifts, and bought them for his baby siblings (including this one, for his sister). It is one of the ‘toys’ that has a permanent residence in their playroom when most of the others are cycled to the basement periodically. The kids love to pretend they’re going to school and work; and they take them on playdates, trips, and doctor’s visits.Pros+ The designs are absolutely adorable, and there is enough of a variety in the designs that it seems they should fit any style.+ The size is perfect for little ones who want to carry a backpack, but who would tip-over with a school sized one. There’s enough room for some small books, dollhouse accessories, matchbox cars, play kitchen supplies, a lunch or snack… you name it, kids love to pack it up!+ Matching accessories (i.e. wallet) … too cute!+ Quality – our son’s backpack has been through a solid 4 years of daily/weekly playtime, and is still in great shape. The biggest sign of wear is the drawstring, which is fraying on the end (be sure to keep it knotted – it frays downstream of the knot, just like any woven string/rope would)Cons- This is not a school backpack! You’ll need something bigger to carry books/papers/folders.- We’ve put it in the washer a few times (i.e. after trips to the doctor’s office). It holds up fine on the gentle cycle, with gentle detergent, but this seems to wear it out more than months of normal play does. Since we use it mostly indoors, this isn’t a problem for us; but if you plan to wash it frequently, it may not last as long.In summary, we love it as a perfect toddler/preschooler backpack. It’s great for playtime and little trips!
